History of Temple
Temple was founded in 1881 shortly after the Colorado/Santa Fe Railroad placed tracks in the area. During these early years, the town consisted of little more than a handful of saloons and a variety of tents and ramshackle shacks. At this time, the town was known as Tanglefoot in reference to its muddy streets.
The railroad attracted a diverse population of individuals, and Temple quickly grew into a thriving community. Its name was changed from Tanglefoot to Temple in 1882 in honor of the railroad's chief engineer: a man by the name of Bernard Temple. By 1884, Temple had a large number of schools, churches, businesses and beautiful homes.
