History

Belton was originally named Nolandville and was changed to its current name in 1851. Even though the construction of the railroad bypassed Belton for nearby Temple, the town experienced growth through the construction of a courthouse and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

It wasn’t until the construction of Fort Hood in 1942 did the town begin to really thrive. As more people were attracted to the area, residential developments began to come about.
